Misconstrue? Fan service is when a company makes something PURELY for the fans and really isn't intended for outsiders, is it not? Game review sites are always using the phrase exactly like that, ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME. They say things like "Tetris DX, aside from being a very fun game, is a blatent exercise in fan service", and it is, thanks to having 8 bit versions of all manner of NES games, something that only really interests Nintendo fans. Super Smash Bros, the whole series is basically one huge fan service tribute. I'm just going by how I hear it being used all the time here.
