There's probably two main reasons theater food is expensive:
1) It's close to the only source of income for the theater. Most of ticket sales go back to the movie companies (which is why theater managers don't hesitate to do refunds: they keep the food, and we keep the profit!).
2) Because we can. Once you're inside the theater, if you get hungry, chances are driving someplace isn't worth the extra fifty cents saved on Dots.
I was happy to see in the article that they mentioned how long it takes to clean a theater. Especially the kids' movies. For some odd reason, there's more popcorn on the floor than the other movies... hm. But popcorn spills sure beat spilled tobacco... spit. Blech.
Oh, and I love movie ads. And now I also know why we start the movies five minutes before the advertised showtime. The More You Know!
