Ah, so I forgot to consider the fact that your opinions (here, predictions) are always the correct ones, OB1?
If the PSP does indeed become a big success it'd both be because Sony did well and Nintendo stumbled. Not just because Sony did well. And I absolutely still think that the PSP has some big drawbacks! People will just ignore them because of how 'cool' it looks and the graphics is can produce... and, most importantly, the Sony/PlayStation name and marketing machine (THAT I've cited as a way for the PSP to succeed many times)...
Sorry, but the PS2 definitely was delayed because of the PSX's success. Remember originally the PS2 was supposed to come out just a couple of years after the PSX? They had this whole schedule... PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5... well, that went away because of how well the PS1 did. Yes, a lack of competition was also a factor. But the PS2 is also #1 in the field, so that cannot explain it all.
As for 'didn't work for DC, won't work for XB2', that's a perfectly good position... first to launch definitely doesn't have a historical connotation with the #1 overall console and I doubt that the XB2 will change that. The best MS can hope for is to be like the Genesis -- an early launch which brings short-term success that the other console(s, in this case) slowly wear away.
Quote:When you use the past as an example you have to look at all of the facts. You never do that, which is why you were so wrong about the PSP never having a chance against the Gameboy.

Quote:The PS2 came out a bit later than it would have if the PS1 were less successful because Sony had no competition to worry about. The Dreamcast was only a niche success and the N64 was dead. No Gamecube for a long time, either. Now, on the other hand, the only company that has a chance of taking the crown from Sony is releasing their next-generation hardware a whole year before they release theirs. Sony's official response is "that didn't work for the DC, so it won't work for the XB2", which is foolish and very much like Nintendo's earlier stance on the PSP (and still the stance of many a blind fanboy, yourself included). I can guarantee, however, that as soon as Sony sees Microsoft's impressive XB2 showing at E3, they're not going to allow any sort of delay for the PS3 and will release it as soon as humanly possible. My guess is that they'll try to get it out as early as summer '06 in Japan. Just a hunch.
