Yeah, I think it's mostly PS2 owners getting another console because they want something new and see how cheap the GC is. But that's hardly a bad thing... Nintendo just needs to keep this up. I think it'll be hard, because the PS name definitely is king now. Oh, sure, Nintendo probably has at least as many top quality games, especially in some genres, but the PS is still very strong... and while people like having Nintendo's games they don't like how there is so little third party support, so the PS is the first choice of a lot of gamers.
Oh, as for game quality, I don't think it's noticably worse now. Remember, there were a LOT of bad games on the NES and SNES. There are just more games now so it's more noticable... especially on a console like the PS2 which has such a painfully high quantity of bad to good.
And yes, the cart vs some newer form of media is probably the biggest question Nintendo has for the next GB. If they go with carts costs will continue to be high and the amount going to developers will continue to be low, definitely bad things... and the game sizes will have to stay very small. But it'll mean compatibility with the hundreds and hundreds of released GB games, a huge plus... so I don't know...
