I just don't think that the differences between the Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, Wario Land, Super Mario Land, etc. serieses are enough to make a big deal out of the fact that this is the "first one" in a long time... in most ways, it's really not...

For instance, the last Nintendo Mario-style side-scrolling platformer was Super Princess Peach, released very recently. Before that there was Wario Land 4, Yoshi's Story, Wario Land 3, etc...
