Checking my Webster's dictionary, bass has two pronunciations:
bass- this one has the long "a" sound, as in "yay!". But it is still spelled "b-a-s-s." It means, "Low in pitch," like a bass guitar
bass- this one rhymes with "ass." It is also spelled, "b-a-s-s." We use this pronunciation when we're talking about the fish.
