    I see what you mean, and it is a 2D game so sprites would work just fine, hypothetically.

    The only issue I can think of that would lead them to this is the advantage of polygon models. Namely, they can make the model do all sorts of things just by manipulating it. On the other hand, with sprites they would have to draw many frames for every single action they want the sprite to do. From what I've seen of the game, they intend for Mario to be doing a lot of different things. I believe polygons are the way to go in this case. Also, this may be one of those "2 and a half D" games, where the gameplay is 2D but the paths wrap around in 3D. In that case, polygons are for the best.
