How so? If they didn't do that, then only one person could play a single copy of the game. If they did, then your whole family could play their own character on a single cart. What does it matter that it's an online game? It's still a good feature to add. Of course, it's the best if they own their own copies so that everyone can play AT ONCE, but you get what I mean.
Anyway, the thing is, a persistant server is EXPENSIVE. It's not just that the computer spends a little time linking up a couple people and then goes on about it's business. It has to be actually managing the entire world constantly. It doesn't need to render an image or anything, but it does need to manage the data and have the game's logic running all the time in that instance, and a LOT of other instances. I bring this up to show why MMORPGs need a fee. I would love it if Nintendo did that, but chances are, they won't... (Oh yes, they don't really NEED to have it persistant, but it'll be running whenever at least one person logs into it.) Nintendo, most likely, isn't going to see any real benefit to letting people create characters in some overall town across systems vs the cost of actually making it possible. Then again, I could be wrong and Nintendo might just be willing to do it despite the costs, but I don't think it's likely. Yes, I know we didn't believe that Nintendo would do much online anyway, but I'm not sure how that effects what I should think on THIS issue :D.
Anyway, here's what I think here. Maybe Nintendo will do it, I don't think so right now, but Nintendo could make some announcement in the next few months that shows they are doing it. But, ya know, if I assume they will and they don't, the more likely thing right now, then I end up disappointed. If I assume they don't and they do, then I'm ecstatic (and if I assume they don't and they don't, then I'm still happy).
All I'm saying is, don't expect it just yet and don't make any plans.
...And I gotta wonder if you can even get that long a town name :D...
