It's really not all that convoluted unless you dont follow it.
And why would you say Nintendo would't go with "other realms"? LttP cleary states that you have to go in to the Sacred Realm, which is now the Dark World, and destroy its evil.
Then in OoT, you actually enter the Sacred Realm and meet the sage of light Rauru who is, in the real world, an owl. And in WW the King of Hyrule (in the real world) is a talking boat in the Sacred Realm. They've already gone with the idea of stories taking place in different realms.
