The problem with the studio is they let too many fools run their most lucrative franchises , They think that tossing millions of dollars in FX will make a good movie that sells. I dont understand them they could save money on pointless wasted CG animation and go back to the good old days of Alien and Aliens , Why do they pick clearly unpopular and high critized directors? Whats the Logic in that? If the want to keep cashing on the aliens franchise they have make a movie that atleast is on par with the most sucessful ones, It seems now its going into downward spiral each movie is even less then the one before it.
AVP did ok given its flaws , It was a popcorn movie , If Paul Anderson had not made it I bet with a more talented hand it could have been like the sales of spiderman.
On a more interesting note , The two alien heads in predator 2 were meant to be Aliens to tease people about their future plans,The prop man just made them look simular to them , Aparently they released a AVP comic book just before the "Skull" incident. They had a movie also planed in 1998 and even early but they postponed it to the future which is now the past.
