The story in Doom was very simple because you play as the only human on the planet and you never interact with anyone. But the whole idea was that you thought these strange creatures are aliens or a rampant disease, but you discover that it's actually demons from hell - that's what made the game so cool. You were FIGHTING the demons of HELL.
Can you imagine what a cool scene it would have been if the audience (who knows nothing or very little about the doom games) who thinks he's fighting weird aliens discovers that he's actually found a portal to hell and he's fighting its minions? It would have been sci-fi with a religous twist, you could have even put a scene in there where the main character discovers hints of God through something iconic, as if this marine is doing God's dirty work like an arch angel.
Oh well, all I want is a scene where someone explains what BFG stands for after it's been used halfway through the movie as the "BFG 9000".
Space Marine 1: *a large gun is being strapped to his chest by two other marines* ...Jesus, this thing is gigantic. It's hard to aim... What if I miss?
Space Marine 2: *takes a marker and writes BFG 9000 on the gun* Big Fucking Gun. It's a room cleaner, if God had a gun; This would be it... you wont miss.
Space Marine 1: what's the "9000" for?
Space Marine 2: *puts a round in to the loading chamber of the BFG that is marked with a biohazard sign, a nuclear sign and a happy face* That's the number of pieces we're going to find you in after you fire this gun.
