Ya know, 4 ports is nice, I'm just saying they couldn't work with previous systems' games due to design issues.
Here's an interesting design solution. 4 ports, all USB. Backwards compatibility could still work just fine, just like using a USB mouse with old DOS games if you have a modern day motherboard. More than that, I could use my PS3 controller on my PC if Sony (or some kind 3rd party) made the right drivers. Hmm, actually what are they even going to add to the next gen's controllers, from ALL sides I mean? I mean, the GCN needs clickable control sticks and to put the upper left and upper right buttons back on their neutered 6 face button layout :D (c'mon, we all know that's exactly what that layout really is), and also that Z trigger needs to be put somewhere reachable :D.
Releasing an HD as an add-on is generally a mistake. Add-ons, as we have all stated, generally almost always do horribly because people who buy consoles suddenly have to dish out even more money. The PS2 HD has done rather well actually, likely due to the Final Fantasy name being attached to it, but it still hasn't sold that well. It's sold well enough that Sony certainly shouldn't have alienated those who have it and also a busted PS2 by not having some method of using it on the new model, but still not all that well. Generally, I always frown on feature removing in "updated" consoles, and this is a pretty big one really.
Eh, anyway, all future consoles need the thing built right in, and hopefully, they can also be removable and replacable in the off-chance you actually manage to fill up the thing.
