I dunno, my PS1 still works as perfectly as the day I got it. All you really need to do is take care of it. Plus, what with the much safer tray system (preventing, you know, the lense from getting horribly exposed and the spindle from getting damaged), honestly I wouldn't want to "downgrade" my system. Really, unless it's a handheld, the size of the system doesn't matter to me.
I can see the PS2 being phased out though, what with the PS3 coming out later on. It's just odd they don't have SOME way to hook up the HDD. I mean, there are a decent number of really good games, small yes, but enough that I'd think they would WANT to oblige them. Namely, Resident Evil Outbreak pretty much needs it. Sure, you can run the game, in the same way a human can run up mount everest, but really, it DOES need it to be played decently at all. The PSOne ditched the system link port though, which WAS supported by some games, and a couple good ones, so this isn't a first. No matter, so long as the PS3 has the HDD. If it's there from the start, all is well. After all, a hard disk really is just about required these days, for all the goodnessess they allow.
