They'll probably stop producing and stocking the old PS2s in a couple months, just like they did with the PS1. You'd have a tough time finding an early-model PS1 outside of eBay or used-game stores.
Mine still works fine, even after my unhealthy, six-month obsession with FFX. Then again, Sony is NOT known for their quality hardware, especially on the PS2. If this one bites the dust I might buy the new model, or if I got another good year or two left in the one I have, simply wait for PS3. Otherwise, I'm fine with the one I have.
