Yes, Great Cave Offensive and Milkyway Wishes are the real treats. Short games tend to have more replayability, but that's only because they're short. Long, challenging games like GCO and MW are more fun in the long run. Indeed, I got stumped at certain parts in both games too. That's where the fun lies: having to stop and think rather than just rush through like in Dynablade and RoM.
And yes, Kirby was rather slow back then. The relay in KSS is nothing like what goes on in Kirby Air Ride. (Though admittingly, I've never played the game. I may rent it when I have some cash. Amazing how quickly $15 can disappear... all I did was buy some food to last the day.)
