Quote:You're insane, Brian. Burnout's like the God of arcade racing games. You're God, Brian. So, show the proper respect lest he smite you with his tires of rubber and his fiberglass body!
Burnout 1 only, remember, I haven't played the second or third games... and while Burnout (1) is fun, certainly, I think that NFSHS is probably better. Rush, of course, I absolutely love and would definintely put in first in car-based racers... the competition isn't close.
As for Moto Racer, ever played Moto Racer 1 or 2? If not don't comment.
Quote:I can't believe I forgot about DKR! Yeah, DKR is definitely as good as MK64, though for different reasons. DKR's mutiplayer was a bit weak while it's single-player mode was awesome, MK64 had a weak single-player mode while it's multiplayer is the shiznite.
Yeah, that's just about right... MK64 for multi, DK64 for single... they pretty much cancel eachother out so I'd say that they are equal. I don't like kart racers quite as much as you but they definitely are fun too.
Quote:Yes, it is! The only decent games on that list are done better on consoles! But then again you've never owned a non-Nintendo system so you wouldn't know that.
First, I forgot a few. New list at bottom.
Many of those games are also on consoles, sure, but that's part of my point... and as for where they are good I'd say that they are just as good on PC. I see nothing in any of those games that would make them more fun on a console than they are on PC with a nice gamepad. Nothing at all. Actually, in some cases they are better -- witness the track creator in Moto Racer 2, the dozens of downloadable tracks and cars for Pod, the online multiplay and downloadable cars for NFS:HS, the online multiplay for Motocross Madness 2, etc... no, the PC is not weak in racing games and the games that are on PC and console are not worse on PC.
Pod... I don't understand why so many people dislike it. I have liked it a lot from the first time I played it and still do... but so many people (not just you) just don't like it much. I know that it was originally about graphics more than anything, but as I said it has so many tracks, and they are so different in style from most racing games, that I see a lot to it beyond the technical qualitites... what's so bad that makes it so disliked? The somewhat slow speed of the cars? Those very same confusing tracks that I see as a strong point?
Oh yeah, one last thing. I don't think I have to own a PSX to know that I think the N64 has a better selection of racing games that I would actually like. No question. I mean... the N64's racing game lineup is incredibly good! I know enough about what the PSX has to know that the N64 is definitely superior. The N64 easily beats the NGC too... don't know about PS2 and X-Box, but I wouldn't exactly be surprised. The N64 is the best racing game console I've ever seen.
And one more thing... how many of those have you actually played?
Quote:Pod and XG are to F-Zero and Wipeout as Bloody Roar is to Virtua Fighter.
I've played Virtua Fighter (3, PS2) and Bloody Roar (the GC one), and couldn't disagree more. Quite unlike Bloody Roar, Pod and XG are actually good games... Bloody Roar is stupid and quite mediocre while Virtua Fighter is awesome. If you want a better comparison (imo) for Bloody Roar, how about DethKarz (based on the demo) and Star Wars Episode I Racer? Now THOSE are mediocre. Not XG or Pod. (and again, the DC game isn't really Pod)
Quote:Shitty, no-fun sim racers that nobody likes to play.
Very popular among a small audience that I respect. It'd take patience and determination to get good at real simulation racing games, after all, and if you have that kind of patience then you have more than I do for those games... I would never call them bad because they are not. Just because I prefer other kinds of games doesn't mean I think those are bad... just like with flight sims, that's not true at all. Just because I think TIE Figher is best in genre doesn't mean that I hate Falcon 4.0... I could never play it decently I'm sure, but you'll never find me calling it bad.
As for where Gran Turismo fits in there, I'd have to play it to decide. I have no idea how it plays so I can't say a whole lot that is relevant to the game.
So... why am I listing these games when you don't care? Simple, I kind of like to make lists of things...
PC Racing Games I have (new to list with *s)
*-Whiplash (good but not great)
*-Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed (very different from the rest of the series. Pretty good.)
*-Monster Truck Madness (Stupid)
*-Ultim@te Race Pro (Fun, but doesn't last long)
-Death Rally (great game!)
-Death Track Racing (Rollcage Stage II) (very good, but high learning curve)
-Drome Racers (okay)
-Moto Racer 2 (great! And a cool track creator!)
-Need for Speed: High Stakes (Fun, but hard...)
-Motocross Madness 2 (Too frusterating for me)
-Pod (quite good; better when the online play system was still operational)
-Rally Championship (Network-Q RAC Rally Championship) (okay)
-Screamer 2 (great game!)
-Test Drive Off Road (bad!)
-Driver (if it counts) (not racing... but fun. If too long and hard.)
-Extreme-G 2 (very, very good)
-Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (good multiplay...)
And of course I've played dozens and dozens of demos of PC racing games. Far too many to list. I'll mention a few that I liked. Speed Busters (Devil Busters on DC), Need for Speed II and III, Wipeout XL, Scorcher, Ballistics, Destruction Derby 2, Moto Racer, Wacky Wheels, Big Red Racing, RalliSport Challenge (better than I was expecting), maybe Re-Volt, etc...
GB: I have Micro Machines (2 copies; one of the GB greats) and Super RC Pro-Am (2 copies; mediocre).
GBC: Micro Machines 1&2: Twin Turbo (poorly done, really) and Micro Machines V3 (lost that one, which is too bad because it is very good).
NGC: F-Zero GX, XG3, XGRA, Wave Race Blue Storm, Burnout, Midway Arcade Treasures (SpyHunter, RoadBlasters, Super Sprint).
N64: F-Zero X, XG1, Rush 2, Rush 2049, Cruis'n Exotica, Wipeout 64, Hydro Thunder, Episode I Racer, DKR, Beetle Adventure Racing, and Excitebike 64.
