Collecting crap may be overused nowadays, but there were better ways to encourage replay in older side-scrollers.
Mario World: Play through the levels several times over to find new levels and areas.
Sonic 3/Knuckles: Play through the levels several times over to find all of the bonus levels and get all of the chaos emeralds, which unlock a better ending and playable Hyper Sonic, Tales, and Knuckles.
Yoshi's Island: Play through the levels several times over to find all of the keys/hidden items to unlock all sorts of stuff.
Mystical Ninja (SNES): Same as GGA.
