Perhaps if English was your main language you would get it more... Really, you are supposed to infer the story from everything you see. See an abandoned ship next to an abandoned island fortress? Well, come up with why on Earth it was there, then read a book relating to it and see how accurate you were.
Then there's the flooded woods, where it's like "Hmm, there must have been some tribe living here, wonder how they got this plumbing technology...".
