Good shooters should do that. R-Type is like that too. Absolutely ridiculous... actually, I found R-Type DX for GBA a bit too hard. After beating it once I never played through the whole thing again... just not fun. Gradius Galaxies is really hard (at least it sure is by the point I'm at...) but it's just more fun. Gradius is the best. :)
On a similar note, P.N.03 is a quite challenging and unforgiving shooter. Oh, I know, it's third person, but I'd probably compare it more to Gradius than Jet Force Gemini... but that's what I was expecting when I got it, so that's a good thing. If you like running forward, dodging, and shooting stuff you'd like it, but it's admittedly simple in design and scope. And the rooms do repeat a lot, and look very similar. Oh well. That doesn't change the fun, and refreshingly hard, gameplay one bit.
