I usually don't factor in hype in my personal take of a game. The fact that JFG and Conker are very overrated has nothing to do with why I don't like them. In retrospect I do believe FF7 and the Resident Evil games are a bit overrated as well, but for awhile they were my favorite games anyway, and still enjoyable to me. It's just that, since then, I discovered series in the same genres that are superior to those games (Xenogears, Silent Hill).
Now, as far as taste in games? Well, if I don't like baseball, which I don't, then I can't appreciate a good baseball team. I can watch them play, and I can have it spelled out for me why one team with a 25-9 record is better than another team with a 25-9 record, but the nuances are lost on me. Yet, in football, I can tell right away why one 8-1 team is actually inferior to a team that is 7-2. I like football and I can tell these subtleties apart. But with baseball, good team or bad, it all tastes like beans to me.
That's why I dismiss most platformers. I know there are differences, but none of them are so drastic that it makes me like them any more than another. I really can't tell them apart because none of them interest me enough to care.
