Crap. I've worked for Wal-Mart, and two small, locally-owned retail businesses in the last five years, and my experience at those two wasn't better than Wal-Mart (one of them, in fact, was significantly worse). Neither of them paid as well, nor did they offer the amount of hours.
I'm department manager of Electronics at my store, and it's hard (very hard sometimes), and it doesn't pay as well as it should, but I get by, and it's a lot of fun at times.
It's not as though a Wal-Mart opens up and former white-collar employees making $40K annual are suddenly faced with $6.50/hr cashiering or starvation. It kills off maybe a hundred or so jobs and provides four times as many, giving at least some opportunity to people who otherwise sit at home collecting unemployment all their lives.
