'Cause Lucas, when he made Star Wars, decided that there is sound in space... or if you want an "explanation", that the explosion ... um, I don't know ... creates a shockwave that doesn't require an atmosphere to keep expanding? Like an explosion would... or just pretend that there's enough atmosphere in that belt. :D
And if it's "up" on the map it's "up"... I'd say that "up" is generally connected in our minds with the Arctic and "down" with the Antarctic, despite the fact that nothing says one is really "up"...
