Yes indeed, and power shielding exists now. If you are to say the gameplay of SSBM is barely any change over SSB, then MKDD is barely any change over MK64. It IS different, far upgraded. Of course, with this in mind there's not much of a reason to really want to play the last one when the new one exists. I know I'll barely touch F-Zero X once I get F-Zero GX. It's not that the last one is suddenly bad or something, but with this... style of game, the multiplayer party type, you tend to ignore the last one when the update comes out. Like how all my friends and I kinda abandoned Goldeneye (an awesome game of course) when Perfect Dark was released, and how we will abandon Halo when Halo 2 is released, and of course how we abandon each of the old Mario Party games when the new one comes out.
