Notably, they provided a more accurate translation of Culex's dialog. He didn't actually have a proper name in the Japanese script, being simply "Dark Lord", so the kept the name in the U.S. but his dialog now mentions just what he's here for. He comes from the second dimension and seeks a warrior from the third dimension to test his power against. As for what they added to it, I'll leave that to you. Let's just say there's an extended post-game now to look forward to.
Oh yes, Rankin Bass did all kinds of stuff! They did Frosty the Snowman, the stop motion Rudolph special (with the elf that wants to be a dentist and the abominable snowman and all that), a LOT of other Christmas specials, and yes you got it right with The Hobbit. Ralph Bakshi had a turn at Lord of the Rings, and between the two animation studios you have a full telling of it. Eh, where there's a whip, there's a way!
But yes, that specific one I linked above was the height of their stop motion, and that's only a glimpse. When Santa becomes a kid he looks like Link, like almost spot on except the tunic's red. Also, the big bad evil army they fight midway? There's a dragon that's basically a blue Volvagia, and one of the childlike elves uses beams of light to combat it's flame. Also some of the smaller good guy types are going into the fight with wooden deku shields, more or less. Just wild stuff. It's basically Christmas Lord of the Rings.
