Yeah, so long as they get the chips correct, it will be just as good as a real Neo-Geo.  They have said that because the consoles' chips are burned permanently and aren't rewritable they have to get it right first try, but given the people behind it I think they can do that.

As for the carts, they are using flash memory but it isn't the kind in modern Nintendo games, it's a kind that is supposed to lasts longer than those especially shortlived chips.  Not ideal but that's about all you can hope for, no modern repro carts for any older console use real masked ROMs as far as I know, it's all rewritable flash chips with limited lifespans.

As for that it works with the original carts, that is certainly part of the appeal, but those original carts are so expensive that getting even a few can be very pricey... but given how massive the carts and their shockboxes are, like, that's okay.  The things aren't just a financial commitment but also a fairly significant space commitment.

Anyway, we now know that there will be a region switch option in the settings, and a violence option, so basically everything from the Unibios other than the cheats menu seems to be built in to this system.  Wonderful!
