It took months but Blizz did FINALLY patch in random starting locations, which is pretty key for online games (to make tower rushes harder, if anything...). However, WCIIR STILL does not have the ability to auto-download maps, meaning most online play is stuck on the same selection of maps from 1995 that it has had since launch. As much as I like those maps, they are not balanced, your starting location affects your win chance.
Modern multiplayer RTS maps are mirrored and flipped, so things are close to even for each starting location. They look much less realistic than the freeform maps you see in WCII or base Starcraft, but are much more fair. WCIIR badly hobbles itself by not having any new maps and not allowing players to download maps in-game; you stilll can only play on other maps by having all players download them outside of the game. Absurd.
Still, that it has random starting locations is something, it's getting closer to the featureset WCII BNE had 25 years ago...
As for WCI Remastered, they haven't changed anything. None of the missing video clips or multiplayer have been put back in. Disappointing.
