I'll be honest, I'm not sure if I care much about the wide vs. square pixels thing -- yes I know it's a 20% height difference but... eh, I thought the remaster looked just fine and didn't mention the square pixels thing because I didn't notice, and while I did hear about it after I wasn't bothered much.
With that said though, Blizzard listened to the critics and just patched both WCI and WCII Remasters!
WC1 Remaster still does not have multiplayer, unfortunately, but they did add a tall pixels option. I guess it looks slightly better. Otherwise it only got a bugfix. They still haven't added in a button to be able to rewatch the intro -- did I mention that that feature is missing? You watch it once then it's gone forever. WCII has an option to rewatch the intro but not I. But anyway.
WCII Remaster got a bunch of changes, however, including, fascinatingly... balance changes. To Warcraft II. Wow I was NOT expecting that! Yes, WCII is an unbalanced game strongly favoring Orc, but it's always been like that and had never been fixed before, they didn't fix it in BtDP or BNE for example. But now they've put in some balance changes to buff heal a bit and change some other things. Fascinating. It'll be very interesting to see how that goes.
Also, they added in an Alliance button in multiplayer games so you can change alliances during games and share vision, added the classic victory animation of the bars increasing (but only to WCII, the WCI video victory/defeat screen animations are shamefully still missing!), added support for folders for finding maps, added a countdown timer before games start, added passworded games as an option for private lobbies... it's a good start. More is still needed -- I don't see a mention of new game modes like TvB and I don't know if they have fixed custom maps so you can actually play anything other than the default maps now, I suspect not but haven't tried it -- but at least they are doing things!
