It's interesting that at the end of the day, after all those big reveals, the three games that have the internet most excited are.... a Mario game, a Zelda game, and a Metroid game. Change is what gives our life meaning. Heck, it's what gives our death meaning. But here we are, celebrating yet more entries in the "big three" franchises in Nintendo's arsenal (that aren't Pokemon) instead of focusing on some brand new IP. Heck, the Mario one is a spinoff... Not even that, a spinoff of another spinoff, that itself turned into a long series standing alongside another.
We're celebrating Samus going 3D... again. Not "for the first time", just, it's been a bit since the last one so it's the "return" we're celebrating. We're celebrating the "originality" of playing as Zelda in a Zelda game. Something that not only should have happened a long time ago, they should have broken away from it always being Link right after Majora's Mask let us play as three completely new characters that had to pretend they were Link, but clearly had their own backstories and motivations.
Don't get me wrong, to my shame I AM very excited about two of these three games, and "tentatively hopeful" about the last one... but frankly, outside of Nintendo? My biggest gaming moments as of late are random indie titles now. Selaco just came out, and that game's amazing not because it's a "boomer shooter" but because it's pretty innovative in it's own right and breaks out of that mold to do it's own thing pretty well.
