Why has Nintendo given up on making non-kart racing games?

Yeah, the focus on Mario Kart is definitely because of how well it sells, but games like F-Zero or Wave Race have lots of potential and have sold in the past... it's disappointing that Nintendo has almost completely abandoned the genre.
