It's because it's aimed at the "professional" market, which is willing to pay those sorts of ridiculous prices. The same is true of Apple's Final Cut which sells for $900 last I checked.
Considering similar capabilities in the open source GIMP software (which really needs to change such an offensive handicap hating name like that if they want to be more widely acknowledged), I really do wonder where all that money is going.
