I agree that I wish they'd been able to take him alive, but he wasn't going to surrender and was either reaching for or had a gun, so I can understand why they'd shoot.
From what I understand it was a 40 minute firefight between the SEALs and Osama and his men.
As for Pakistan, their foreign minister has said something to the effect of "we're glad he's gone, so the mission is a success and we're happy".
