I said explanation, not excuse. The two are different. Because I agree, there is no excuse... but I think that is the explanation for why it could have happened. Note how the American games in the series, the Prime games, don't do any of that stupid junk. Sexism is bad here, but so, so much worse there, and that is reflected in stuff like anime, manga, and games. So while I am surprised that they actually did this to Nintendo -- I would not have predicted it -- once it happened, sadly I can understand how (or why) it did.
But yeah, I definitely mean it as an explanation, not an excuse. There is no excuse. And yes, some Japanese games do have better depictions of female characters than is the average, that is true. Other M, unfortunately, is on the other side of that.
