Everything is in its place, each pile of stuff is separate. I know where things are. :)
Semi-organized piles of stuff on the floor/on tables/etc. is a perfectly valid organizational strategy!
I would say though, it's inherited. My mom and sister are also pretty messy people. Home to me is a place with piles of papers, books, newspapers, etc. everywhere... one other thing I see wrong with that room of GR's is not nearly enough paper, such as papers, books, etc. A room without a bookshelf full of books... I don't think that existed for us, or for me now. Flat surfaces are places to put piles of books and magazines on, after all. What better use for them could there be? :)
