I think the way these are supposed to go is that you show up in the middle of a battle with some newcomers... let's say FROM SPACE, with POWERS LIKE I'VE NEVER SEEN. At first our styles clash, but by the end we combine our amazing abilities and wipe out the enemy, who in dying breaths recounts a tragic past and wonders if in another life we could have been... friends.
