On that note, I haven't played Chrono Cross, but the way that its major theme is that people can't change their fates, and that most of the whole Chrono Trigger cast actually died horribly instead of changing things for the better (as you do in Chrono Trigger) is just reprehensible and definitely does not make me want to play the game...

It's a pretty bold move, actually. Not many companies would have the guts to do something like that and risk upsetting the fans.
