Because the mountains in the background look like whales breaching the water (one has its mouth opened, the other's is closed), the bowling pin penguins are either mirrored, reflecting the surface, or made of checkered fur. The sun is the only thing natural in that picture, and everything in that surreal world is drawn, even the ground itself, to the beauty of the natural thing as if its their salvation from their abnormality.
