Exactly why did France invade Mexico anyway?
I don't know everything, but I know that Napoleon III coveted an American Empire. Once the American Civil War ended, however, it became known that the US wouldn't tolerated European powers scheming in our own backyard (Monroe Doctrine.)
Just saying that Mexico isn't the only ones who celebrate defeat... there are many other cases. How about Thermopylae or the Alamo, for instance?
