Donte Stalworth and Dany Heatley were found guilty of vehicular homicide and neither of them received any jailtime - is it such a big surprise that rich and famous (and in Ted's case, highly influential and beloved) people recieve special treatment under the law? Besides, it was forty years ago, get over it. I bet nobody felt worse about it than Ted. Maybe if Mary Jo knew how to swim better we'd be mourning the death of President Kennedy and not Senator Kennedy.
I think you're probably right on that last point, if he hadn't caused that accident, he'd most likely have been president. Would we be better off that way, versus him staying in the senate for so long, though? It's tough... I'm not sure. He did such an incredible amount of good in this country and this world as a senator, would he have gotten even more done in a few years as president? Maybe... but it's hard to say. Both are powerful positions, and even not being president he was one of the most influential and successful politicians of the last fifty years without question. I think that this health reform issue would have gone better if he'd been around to help fight for it... which is why it's so, so sad, given that health care for everyone was his most important issue. :(

You're not American... :)
... And I very, very, very much hope that he is wrong there and the serious reform we need happens, or at least something close to it.
