Final Fantasy VIII is one of those games that I hyped up to death on myself because I loved VII so much, then I actually played it and thought it was wet ass on a hot day.
But I tried it again a couple of years ago and I actually found myself enjoying it.
Does FFVIII's story have holes? Hell yeah it does. Final Fantasy as a series is rife with them. I still think, overall, it was one of the more compelling stories found in the series. And once you understand how junctioning works (a large factor in why I did not initially enjoy the game), the gameplay is kind of fun, too.
I still won't rank it as one of the series' best, but I think it's underrated (just as I think FFVI is overrated, as time goes by).
