Quote:Part of the reason that GTAIV's story doesn't work the way the creators wanted it to because inbetween cutscenes of Niko lamenting his gangster lifestyle you're having him gun down dozens of people in the streets and stealing whatever cars you happen to come across, making all of the cutscenes come off a hypocritical rather than poignant.
Very good point. It's a general problem games have. In order to have gameplay, you need to have a LOT of fights. So where a fantasy novel has maybe a fight every once in a while, spending lots of time on plot and character development, political intricacies, etc, a fantasy game needs to spend 90% of that time with you fighting things... so in your average fantasy game your characters wipe out an entire continent's worth of random wildlife and badguys by the time they're done. Books or movies aren't like that... it does make it really hard for me to find credible characters like "the innocent one" or whatever when they're in a party of people constantly killing things. Um, what are you doing all day? The disconnect between gameplay and story can be huge at times, for sure. It's the same here.
