That makes me wonder something. Are they going to patch the game over the Wii connection to get this feature in, or will they need to send these updated disks to everyone? That's really not something a lot of companies are going to want to do.
I wonder this because you remember that game killing Twilight Princess glitch right? The "can't go any further in the game because of the cannon" thing? They didn't patch it over Wii Connect, they had everyone send in their old disks and they just replaced them. I had to wait some time before I was able to finish Zelda due to that... Considering how much easier it would have been to do it over the internet connection, for BOTH sides, and cheaper for Nintendo, they definitely have motivation to do things that way.
BEFORE YOU CAN SAY WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO LACK INTERNET, they could STILL send the updated disks to THOSE people, but it would still save them a lot more money to provide an online patch because that's less people they need to print updated disks and mail to. There, I try to anticipate flawed arguments before they are made.
So what we're left with is the very likely scenario that the Wii's current OS simply isn't set up to patch games, and current games simply aren't set up to BE patched.
Nintendo is on top of the market right now, and they say they learned their lesson about ego from the last time they were deposed, but unless they take a lot of effort to win over both 3rd party developers and customers who love a good online experience, they risk losing it all again... Let's not forget MS and Sony are a mere software update away from being able to use the Wii remote in their own games and there's nothing in copyright law to stop them. It's only a matter of one or the other thinking of it first.
Nintendo has stayed afloat only from the sheer quality of their own games in the last two generations (their games are good enough they can pretty much count on me buying their systems even if they are the only ones making good games for it), they really don't want to have to do that again. Nintendo, don't immitate the WRONG parts of Apple's strategy.
