Seriously, they could make it harder. It's perfectly possible to make AI that's pretty much unbeatable. Of course making it play like a human -- making mistakes sometimes, being more varied in what it does, etc -- is much harder, and that is the advantage of playing against people... but when that's all there is to it, and there is no conversation and not even a NAME, that's not enough. I mean, DS online was disassociating enough with its idiotic "you can't talk to them and can only see their names" design... and now NOT EVEN NAMES? Wha... it makes me think "do they just hate us or are they just stupid?", but I know that that's not what's going on. It's really something I've referenced before, about how Nintendo is trying to 'fight' what it sees as 'Japanese people don't like online gaming'... and this quote from that last article, I think, is absolute proof of that. Really, when I read this I was somewhat shocked... "Do they honestly think that people still THINK that way???" ... but yes, they obviously do. And who knows, maybe some (many?) people in Japan DO still think that way... but they don't anywhere else in the gaming world, and Nintendo should know that. Forcing us into a design designed for people who are far, far behind on the online gaming curve (average nongamer/casual gamer Japanese people, that is) is horrible.

I've played online games before where you couldn't communicate with the other players. Those are the kinds of games you quickly stop playing online and never go back to, in favor of games with competent feature sets.
As for "this is free-for-all", well obviously they need far more than just one option. They should have is an unranked random match mode (separate options for each major battle type -- 1v1, 2v2, FFA, etc), a ranked match mode with auto match making (think WC3), and a Custom mode where you can create a game and set the rules exactly how you want, and then people can join the game. Private games would be creatable (and perhaps auto-matchable, though that's not as important with friendslist games if you have actual game creation options) separately.
That is, Battle.net's model.
