Well... its not a matter of undeniable proof. Vicarious proof and reasonable explanations based on some kind of reliable presentation is usually trustworthy. For example, you don't need to go to Iraq to believe there is a war going on. Of course, as David Letterman once said, the last time the French wanted absolute proof in the manner that DJ wants absurd absolute proof, they got their proof in the form of German tanks rolling through Paris.
As ABF said, if there was a translation group, there would be credits for it. The credits of the game however mention Nintendo staff doing the translation. Its unreasonable to expect that someone would translate the Japanese ROM and then give Nintedo credit for something they didn't do. Its also unreasonable for the head of the Starmen.net, then Earthbound.net to run a whole contribution campaign to have the game dumped, and then translate it clandistinely so as to make $400 (he probably could saved more money by not wasting the time and bandwidth).
Also, the provider of the ROM I remember back then provided digital photos of the cart that he obtained. It was checked in Starmen.net, then Earthbound.net and among members of Zophar's Domain to be unadulterated digital photos and screen caps. I myself verified it too doing some checking through Adobe Photoshop.
Sure someone could have set up an elaborate scheme to make it LOOK like Nintendo translated the ROM of EB0, that there was actually translation patch that was secretly done just to make some $400, but don't you find it unlikely ?
And besides, a remake of Earthbound 0 doesn't mean that its going to represent the original cart. Because they canned the publishing of the project, and they lost the only cart they had, they probably are going to go back to the drawing board with the original Japanese ROM, give it new graphics, new translation, and graphics.
Of course, if I did find out later down the line that it was some elaborate scheme to scam the community for a money, I would be pissed...
