I really liked how the SNES, N64, and GC all shared a cable connector... (and PS1 and PS2, but I don't have a PS2...) it's annoying that Wii doesn't use it too. It's very, very convenient to not have to constantly switch cables just to use other systems. I've got five consoles here, it's a pain...
It is nice that, for the most part, the cables were compatible across generations, but I can see no reason, aside from profit, why the cables had to be proprietary to begin with.
The early-model PlayStations had standard RCA jacks on the back, which Sony later dropped in favor of their own cables. These things should all just use standard connections.
