So, those cool romantic guys with the hats that go on for miles and who quite politly tell the guy who killed their father to prepair to die, or wild lawless rogues of the wild west with nothing but a gun at their side and dust in their boots?

    And....begin!

Im confused; are you comparing cowboys to swordsmen, or asking if cowboys were friendly or roguish...?

    ....

    It's a competition!

And yes, guns will always be superior. Anime, while cool, is stupid, swords can't kill a gunman because he's stronger!

Well of course guns will always beat out swords; unless it's a slow-firing musket, inwhich case the fencer would dash in and kill the hapless person with the gun.

Fencers or cowboys...hmm...fencers seem to be polite and civilized cowboys in that aspect. They ask you if it's alright for them to kill you before they do. Cowboys just blast you with their 6-shooters. For the sake of being different, though, I'll just side with fencers.

Cowboys, of course... Zorro notwithstanding, in the real world they wouldn't stand a chance...

Guns aren't always good, for example, you get ambushed at close range and are in a close combat fight.

So? Guns can kill close range or long range! It's not like you are using a cannon here.

No way man! Sherlock Holmes would be all like "elementary" and then he'd cane Indianna right in the gut and cane him in the head, and say "Could someone say timber?", because he would see the attack coming no matter what Indianna did, and more importantly he'd have other same era things on his side, like Mr. Hyde!

In your dreams! Indiana would be like "Suck it!" and Sherlock would go "By joe! What in effinelly are you popping on about?" and would get smacked in the face by himself, because he's actually Moriarity and wants to kill his other personality

One of the things you realize in close combat self defense, or offense, is that the only gun good in a close combat melee, or fist fight is either not using one, or using a pistol.

The reason is, its quicker and more viable tactic to disarm the other guy and kick his ass rather than try to get in a firefight where possible. The dynamic of a fight that close in is that either you run out of bullets shooting someone who dogding in and out of cover, and the moment you run out of bullets, he kicks your ass as you go for a magazine. Its even worst if you're using a 6 shooter. Either that or he's already disarmed you and is already kicking your ass because the disarming techniques usually put you in a disadvantage. In which case, you might as well use your fists and maybe a knife/dagger/sword/whatever.

Of course cowboys probably don't fight at that close of a range anyways, except maybe when they get in a barfight or something like that.

How do you dogde that close? You can't move fast enough to dodge bullets, and you can't possibly hear the shot before you are hit by it, because the bullet travels faster than sound. Dodging bullets... And how is a fist swing EVER going to outspeed a trigger pull? The only issue is the idiot who takes their time deciding when to pull the trigger.

At close range, you have to turn faster and more to aim, not to mention theres more pressure to fire blind and when the enemy moves just a little you have to reaim alot. This is a fact that fighter pilots for example, use when they are under heavy AA gun fire. They fly low and close, causes the gunners to panic, and the angle change of the fighter changes alot faster than you can turn the turrets. As opposed to flying high where the AA guns can shoot you down with minumum turning angles. This is a fact that tanks also take advantage of, although both of these are at a slightly augmented scale because of the nature of their size.

You don't dodge bullets, think of it as making it extremely difficult for them to aim and hit.

Thats why in close combat, high magazine count pistols, knives, daggers, shovels, swords, etc. excel over using your rifle, or the pistol when you have to reload your magazine.

I said gun in general, not rifle.

Yes, and rifles are guns, and so are pistols. LIke I said, pistols are only moderately useful in close combat because it still has limited bullet count, and you still have to aim and fire even if its marginally faster than a rifle, and rifles are more useful if you use them as a club.
