    December 06, 2004 - Doom the movie was fast-tracked to take advantage of the publicity and fanfare surrounding the release of the Doom 3 computer game, and filming has already gotten underway in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. Polish director Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die) has replaced rookie Enda McCallion on the $70 million film production.

    Czech news magazine Novinky.ca reports on a visit to the film set, with numerous details about the shoot. They say that although the filmmakers are keen to preserve the dark, spooky atmosphere of the videogames, much of the plot has been changed in Dave Callahan's screenplay. The original Doom and the recent Doom 3 were both about a team of space marines sent to defend a Mars research base from Hellish monsters who invade via an interdimensional portal. The movie, however, will take place not on Mars, but rather a fictional "remote planet." The film's monsters will not be minions from Hades, but humans infected with a mutagenic super-virus.

    Doom the movie intends to be more of a horror flick than an action film, but with more shooting and fighting than your average scare-fare. It's beginning to sound a lot like Resident Evil in space, actually. The story will center around soldier John Grimm, the character played by Karl Urban (Eomer in The Lord of the Rings). Many scenes will be shot in first-person view, the perspective used to great effect in Doom 3 and many other first-person-shooter games.

    Doom will be released in theaters on August 5th, 2005.

    Seriously, why... I mean, what would be so bad about demons on Mars? Why zombies (demon-ish zombies?) on some other planet? It doesn't make sense... but whatever, I am sure that this movie was never really meant to actually be any good. :D

    It's not "what is so bad about it?" so much as "why is THAT better?!". Face it, both plots pretty well suck. Sure a brilliant story writer could actually MAKE them work somehow, but they didn't, and they won't.

    And I would say that hell demons are better than yet another movie with stupid humans-with-an-evil-virus... and Doom is supposed to be on Mars darnit. :)

    Like DJ said, Doom's plot is already dumber than dumb, so any changes they make can not theoretically make it worse than it already is. It's just not possible.

    True, but it doesn't seem like mutated humans are better than demons... it lets them do a RE-style plot that they obviously want, but what's so wrong with portals to hell? :) Eh, I guess they wanted something possible in a "real world"... but Doom isn't realistic, it's pure fiction, so I don't know why they should care about that.

    Doom's plot is akin to something a brooding fifth grader would come up with during his lunch period. It wouldn't matter if they changed the plot to Eskimos trying to take over Nevada with unicorn zebras, the plot is just that stu--.... actually, that would be really cool. I take that back. Eskimos trying to take over Nevada with unicorn zebras would make for a cool movie.

    Resident Evil (films): Crappy shit-a-thons with average folk'll killing zombies around town.


    Which of the above should a Doom movie be modeled on...? An awesome movie whose plot is not unlike that of the Doom games, or two horribly lame movies which much less in common with the Doom games? Hollywood is so fucking retarded. No wonder they all are liberals and love Michael Moore.

    Doom definitely has a lot more in commong with Aliens than any zombie movies that's for sure and Aliens was an awesome space marien movie [actually it was the orginal] while Resident Evil movies are bad zombie movies.

    The story in Doom was very simple because you play as the only human on the planet and you never interact with anyone. But the whole idea was that you thought these strange creatures are aliens or a rampant disease, but you discover that it's actually demons from hell - that's what made the game so cool. You were FIGHTING the demons of HELL.

    Can you imagine what a cool scene it would have been if the audience (who knows nothing or very little about the doom games) who thinks he's fighting weird aliens discovers that he's actually found a portal to hell and he's fighting its minions? It would have been sci-fi with a religous twist, you could have even put a scene in there where the main character discovers hints of God through something iconic, as if this marine is doing God's dirty work like an arch angel.

    Oh well, all I want is a scene where someone explains what BFG stands for after it's been used halfway through the movie as the "BFG 9000".

    Space Marine 1: *a large gun is being strapped to his chest by two other marines* ...Jesus, this thing is gigantic. It's hard to aim... What if I miss?

    Space Marine 2: *takes a marker and writes BFG 9000 on the gun* Big Fucking Gun. It's a room cleaner, if God had a gun; This would be it... you wont miss.

    Space Marine 1: what's the "9000" for?

    Space Marine 2: *puts a round in to the loading chamber of the BFG that is marked with a biohazard sign, a nuclear sign and a happy face* That's the number of pieces we're going to find you in after you fire this gun.

    Doom has a plot? ... oh right, Demons from Hell escaped and kill stuff on Mars. Very simplistic, but it works decently for a very simplistic game...

    A decade-old pioneering first-person shooter's plot isn't up to par with those of James Cameron of George Lucas. It's a fucking game, not a novel. The point of a game is to entertain. Would anyone both reading pages and pages of dialogue? It's not like they could have had FMV cutscenes. As it is now, they had a meager plot between episodes saying what you were after; and no one cares about them.

    *Awaits while the Tendo City Anal Committee lynches ID for not being more thorough with the plot of Wolfenstein*

    -Are these WWII Nazis or Neo-Nazis?
    -Where does it take place, Germany? If so, where in Germany?
    -Why doesn't BJ Blackowitz try peacefully negotiating in stead of shooting all the Germans?
    -Why don't any of these Nazis have Mauser rifles?
    -Why aren't there any living quarters in any of the identical levels? Where do the Nazis live and sleep while they're not being shot?

    etc.

    Okay, I finally read all the Doom comic. Wow. My brother and I almost choked we were laughing so hard. Especially at the first few pages. The things the guy says and the expressions on his face are just insane. :D

    I'd say they're both on the same level of sub-quality. And absolutely hilarious. :D

    I think Johnny Turbo has an edge, actually... considering they actually based the character of Jonathon Brandstetter (aka Johnny Turbo) on a real person, not to mention the inside jokes/sexual undertones of the relationship they give him with Tony. It's absolutely priceless. :D The Doom comic comes close in second, though.

    OB1/ A plot about space truckers finding an evil alien egg and being killed by it in space... on a space ship, is no more of a better plot than evil demons from a portal to hell on Mars killing space-farring military squads. Good plots are restricted to dramas, in sci-fi or fantasy anything goes. It's all about the characters and how they'll survive what they're about to go through.

    I think the whole alien think is less lame than the whole portal from hell thing. Space truckers finding alien eggs... made for a good scifi movie. But scientists accidentally opening up a portal to hell on mars? I just can't help but laugh at that. And that's basically already been done with Event Horizon, which sucked.

    It's science fiction, OB1, with an emphasis on the fiction... I don't see anything wrong with that. And it's not like Doom needs a fantastic plot anyway. It's about shooting.

    For a movie, popcorn or not, it needs more than just shooting, I think.

    The whole "Oops, we opened up hell" scenario is a good one. It's done really well in the Warcraft books, I think it could be done well for a movie based on Doom.

    ... but then you say that it does not need a "fantastic" plot (yeah it's just about there, but not quite), and that shooting is all that matters...

    It depends on the circumstances, OB1. Here I wouldn't really want to see that second one be in a Doom movie unless it was done just for humor, but the one Lazy posted... as I said it's kind of cool in a dumb way... as for a story in a Doom movie, Doom is not the kind of game that needs a fantastic and deep story. Some games benefit from that. Doom only really needs an excuse to get you to kill things. Demons from Hell does that well. Mutated people from a virus does too, but is more common... so I prefer the demons from hell idea. :)
