    I guess you really have to to have been into the original Pokemon to get the joke.

    That's Missingno, or "Missing Number", the glitch pokemon, destroyer of save states. There was a glitch that messed up the random encounter table in the original game. When this happened, instead of encountering one of the normal pokemon, this pixel block monstrosity would appear called "Missingno." It had numerous quirks. Firstly, it would corrupt a lot of pokemon graphics, secondly, whatever was in the 4th item slot in your inventory would multiply to some impossible number, which made it desirable to encounter this thing to multiply stuff like, normally, Rare Candy (get it now?). Lastly, if you actually caught the thing, there was a chance as long as you held onto it that either it would just change into a normal pokemon or erase your game completely.

    Ah. I've heard of Missingno, but certainly wouldn't recognize it on sight, no.
