I installed the widescreen mod and set it to my native resolution, and now it appears as if the camera is positioned a quarter-mile in the sky relative to the action.

Well, that's how 2D works. Try setting it to something lower, like 1280x800 [or whatever]

Yeah, it's designed for 640x480, or 800x600 at the maximum. Anything above that and you shrink things a lot.
