    There have been these insane commercials from Microsoft for... product? Anyway, they have Seinfeld running around talking trivial meandering nonsense with Bill Gates. Then they show the Microsoft logo, and then (I assume) we are intended to buy something from MS. Could anything lack more content?

    Yeah, so that's what the comic is about, and they nailed it beyond perfectly. The meandering nonsense that's supposed to sound like "what real people talk about", the sudden "This was an advertisement for you to buy from us", the complete irrelevence to ANYTHING MS actually does and the total failure to even bother incorporating an actual product into the advert? Yeah, it's all there, and they didn't even need to exxagerate anything to make it funny. As such, it's a perfect parody. Thus, comic genius.

    Oh, I haven't seen them. Must not be running on cable news channels (CNN/MSNBC)... that's mostly what I'm watching (or Cartoon Network/Boomerang, but Boomerang has no ads).

    Yeah, I don't usually read it. I just don't find it funny most of the time... I generally don't like their humor much. I'm more surprised when one of their comics really IS funny than when it isn't, I think.

    The first and third ones aren't funny at all; the second one is slightly entertaining, but the "point" they are making is incredibly, incredibly stupid, to the degree that any potential humor is wiped out (a common thing, with their strips); and as for the last one, I like the Escher reference, but it's still quite juvenile. Still, the fourth one is the best of those four.

    No ABF, it isn't.

    It's a reference to a game.

    In this game, you rotate a 3D level to make 2D paths based on the camera's viewpoint of that level. Hence, the joke.

    Woah... now THAT's a blatant Escher reference! I'd heard the word "EchoChrome" before (that is, I knew it was some kind of downloadable game for some platform I didn't have), but didn't know anything about what it was, no.

    So it was a reference to a game based on Escher-style geometry? How is this not an Escher reference, then, again? It is, obviously.

    I know Escher styles -- that is, 'impossible designs'. They're very cool designs and concepts. That 'Waterfall' picture is so awesome... as are most of them. :) There's a 'Metamorphosis' poster up in our house, I have an old 'Escher Interactive' program (which I got because the stuff is cool), my dad (a mathematician) thinks it's interesting stuff (has a t-shirt with Escher-like 'odd shapes' stuff on it, I believe)... that's Escher. No question about it, none at all.

    Actually, looking at that article, I got one thing wrong...

    This Escher-inspired artist (also linked by the EchoChrome article) is the most direct reference.

    His most famous work is displayed on the page, and I've seen it before too. That triangle design might, in fact. be the design on that shirt my dad has... Makes sense that Escher inspired people... impossible shapes are fun. :)

    It looks like a triangle at first, but then you look at the colors and realize how impossible a design it is... amazing work.

    You missed the point. The comic was intended to be about the game, how you could rotate a 3D level into different 3D shapes, and how childish that could potentially be.

    Escher's paintings, even as inspiration, were static. He never rotated an image in real time, hence why you didn't get the joke without knowing about the game.

    It was a reference to the game and that was the entirety of the joke.

    Of course he knows about Escher.

    What? Of course I got the joke... if you know Escher's work, you absolutely don't have to know about that game to understand that comic. Going from the first frame to the third it becomes an impossible shape... where did you get the idea I didn't get the joke, when from my first comment I made it quite clear that I understood it? Just because I didn't know about the game?

    If that's your reasoning, you're saying that you don't think that the game is Esher-inspired, essentially, and Wikipedia proves you wrong on that point.

    Um, the 3rd panel is a perfectly possible shape, it just isn't the original 3D shape.

    No I'm not saying that. Yes I understand it was partially inspired by escher. That's irrelevent. The idea is you can ROTATE the level into different shapes. That's the joke. Escher never rotated a shape into another shape in real time like that and had a little guy navigate a level entirely via real time perspective shifting.

    I'm not saying the game wasn't inspired by escher, and I know that the penny arcade guys know about him. I'm saying the comic is ABOUT the game, and it's funnier if you know about the game they are referencing because the joke makes a lot more sense.
