Quote:Besides defending the PS3, Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular he said the Linux-based operating system on the console's hard drive will have enough processing power and non-gaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft's Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH... ... ...hahahahahahaRofl

    also, about the controller:

Quote:Harrison went on to say that the PS3's motion-sensitive controller had been in the works for some time. "We have already worked on it a long time, and Nintendo almost certainly has done likewise with something similar," he said. "It is perfectly naturally for two companies to work on [nearly] identical devices. It's like that with technology." He reiterated that the PS2's Dual Shock controller is the "de facto-industry standard for video games. ... We define the standard for the man-machine interface for playing games."

Is this all some elaborate hoax? Can a company really be so full of itself that they can believe a game console is going to replace the home computer? I keep thinking that in a month or so Sony is going to say "surprise" and they will reveal the real PS3 with a decent price tag and games people are actually going to look forward to, and that they've been acting like assholes for the past few months as a giant sociological experiment.

There ARE games I want, but every time I see footage of something like MGS4, I can't help but ask "is this worth $650?" and coming up with the answer of "no".

I'll wait for the price drop, which if everyone else is doing the same, will be pretty soon after launch.

But what if Sony is right? What if everyone and their dog DOES buy this system?

Well, there's going to be the sony loyal fanbase, which isn't much right now but still. Then you'll have people buying just because it's expensive; The same people who had to have plasma TV, razor phone, etc because it was a status quo. After that you have kids begging for one at christmas time who will want to immitate the status quo.

but multi console owners, gameplayers, etc wont be picking one up until the price drops. And even then, other than MGS4 there has to be some more killer apps. Games that make sony haters want a PS3. as of right now, nothing of that type exists in the pipeline other than MGS4. I seriously expect the PS3 to launch and carry itself very similar to the PSP. In other words, surviving but not by much.

Or it could go the way of the CD-i...

Unfortunatly it's just too hard to say right now.

I've never actually met the person who HAS to have the expensive stuff just to show it off. I've thought I myself am like that, but then I realized the stereotype is supposed to include people who actually want a cell phone and I've yet to get one, plus my idea of transportation is basically just something that gets me from point a to point b (and on weekends point c).

DMiller, I think that they are serious... it is hard to believe, but if you buy in to all of their hype about the thing, it makes sense. Think about it:

    -it's as powerful as a high-end pc
    -it attaches to the internet
    -DVD playback
    -Blu-Ray playback
    -CD playback
    -PS1 and PS2 game support
    -downloadable content
    -top of the line graphics
    -Linux available

... Oh right, and it plays new games too!

It does everything... who needs anything else? :)

(Of course, for every item on that list there are multiple ones that explain why you DO need something else too, but to Sony that ... other ... list doesn't exist... :D)

I'm just not interested. If sony can break some mystical threshold and release a dozen quintuple A quality games, games so good the very whisper of them causes people to swoon, I would consider plunking down the cash, and I would actually USE the word "plunk" in the process.

Yes, one of the main flaws is that connectivity and convergence are highly overrated and people haven't really shown a need for such products, despite companies' repeated attempts to get people to use them... :)

There's also the minor hitch that with Sony's love for DRM, there's no way the system will be as open (for media formats, for uses allowed, for what is downloadable, etc) as people want, making hacks or good old PCs necessary.

I heard that when the PS3 launches there's going to be a compelling love story between Jack and Rose.

Jack and Rose have destroyed COUNTLESS worlds and are feared by many more!

Only Solid Snake can stop their combined might!

You ARE talking about the MGS2 Jack and Rose right?

Is he blonde or brown haired? Does that helmet have the magical ability to make your hair brown?

I work at Circuit City in the games department and I can tell you that alot of parents are saying no way to their kids request for a PS3. Most people, especially around here, don't have that kind of money, seeing as alot of them barely scraped by on the 360 and the economy is just startinjg to pick around these parts after about 6 years of a local depression.

Plus the blue-ray / DVD HD format is the old VHS / BETAMAX war all over again. I am going to wait for both the price to drop, and if blue-ray fails, to see a PS3 with either Dual Support or just DVD HD.

I'm calling this the begining of the end for the Playstation line. I know alot of people won't agree with me, but I just don't see this thing succeeding.

From what I've heard, one of Kojima's goals for MGS4 is for fans to actually get to like Raiden. He feels he was hated for the wrong reasons, and wants to show can he can be badass in his own right.

Apparently, he's now just like ninja from MGS, and just before you see him in that scene, he single-handedly takes down at least a couple of the new Metal Gears.

The PS2 will still be a living console probably for the next few years, like the PS1 was after the PS2's release, so Sony's defeat is far from certain... but it does seem to be true that perception among gamers is turning against Sony. Sony must see it through their delusions, but they don't have much room to maneuver... the PS3 is very, very expensive to make and they simply can't swallow something like $400 on every one sold just to match the X360's price.

What's with the format wars? Can't they just work together to create an open standard? I can see no advantage one has over the other, aside from minor technical details no one's ever going to really notice.

No, because there's more money to be had in creating your own, proprietary format.

OH! Right... But splitting the market like this... Apparently whoever decided "I need to create my own format even if there's no real advantage aside from the monies" doesn't care about consumer casualties as a result of the early adopters adopting the "wrong one".

Why should Sony care? If Bluray wins out, all the HDDVD early-adopters will eventually end up with Bluray players.

Rules of capitalism? All capitalism is is the idea that companies should be fairly unmoderated. It doesn't say it's "evil" to be generous! I mean, what is the GOAL of the people there anyway, aside from money? I mean, what are their DREAMS and how does making a competing format for no good reason let them accomplish said dreams?

To a degree, yes, but most people stop caring about that when the mafia shows up.

Sony wants Blu-Ray to win, HD-DVD wants their standard to win (who is it backing that, I forget offhand...), and while they did try to come to an agreement they failed, so we get this... it is annoying for sure, but... eh, it doesn't seem like higher density discs are really needed yet, so we've got time to figure out the winner.

Oh nose! 3 or so disks I'll need to swap :D. Yeah for now there's no real need. And, like everyone "in the know" about it, Imma wait and see on this until a victor emerges. Everyone "out the know" won't care. They won't care until they either see something tangible or have been tricked into thinking they saw something tangible about how great they are.
